A patio door lock. Yes, really. It was falling out of its door, a sad state of affairs caused by the absence of the long screw of unspecified size we see here

I went to price a new lock and saw from the packaging that it was held in place by an M5 screw. Result! Bought five 40mm M5 screws, screwed one in, lock now remains securely locked in place.

Downside: now have four surplus 40mm M5 screws.

I like when ordinary made-in-China hardware uses standard parts, though you really can't count on it. There's a game table at my grandmother's house that has (among other things) 4.8 grade metric bolts in a non-standard coarse threadpitch and some securing screws in #12. Very odd.

The curmudgeon in me says 'Don't worry... It will break again."

In fairness, it didn't break the first time. The tenant in the house I was letting decided to change the lock but neglected to replace the screw.
